Seminar explores social communication documents of the Church

Divine Word Father Franz-Josef Eilers will lead a seminar exploring Church documents on social communication on December 5-6, 2014. The seminar titled “Church Documents on Social Communication, Overview and Introduction” will cover more than two centuries of Church thought and stance on communication concerns and issues. In September this year, Fr. Eilers has released a 640-page book on the subject titled “Church and Social Communication: Basic Documents 1936-2014, Third Edition.” Along with other publications of the same author, this book is standard reference material in the MAT-SPC program (Master’s in Theology major in Social/Pastoral Communication) offered at the UST Graduate School, Manila. The third edition of “Church and Social Communication, Basic Documents” was published on September 9, 2014. The 640-page book contains all basic communication documents of the Church from 1936 to 2014, edited and introduced with appropriate historical background by Fr. Franz-Josef Eilers, svd.

All in all, the publication contains full texts of 17 Vatican documents, 47 World Communication Day Papal messages, as well as communication sections of 19 other documents including 4 which have been published by local churches.

The documents stretch almost a century starting with Pope Pius XI’s Vigilanti Cura (1936) to Pope Francis’s Evangelii Gaudium (2014).  They include the Second Vatican Council Decree Inter Mirifica (1963) and its follow-up documents Communio et Progressio (1971) and Aetatis Novae (1992).

First Research Consultation Held at the JFCC

JFCC First Research Consultation AttendeesThe Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences-Office of Social Communication (FABC-OSC) organized the First Research Consultation on Communication for the Church in Asia at the Saint Joseph Freinademetz Communication Center (JFCC) in Quezon City from 10 to 12 June 2014. The participants of the said consultation are scholars and practitioners in the field of communication coming six countries. Invited scholars who were not able to attend submitted their contributions in line with their expertise.

New Communication Documents Book Released

Communicating Church: Social Communication Documents” was printed in a second edition in January 2014. Important updates include a section on Pope Francis and his first Apostolic Exhortation Evangelii Gaudium (2013) on proclaiming the Word. The history of Catholic Church and printing after Gutenberg’s invention of the movable press was also expanded. Scholars and researchers in Church and Social Communication will find inspiring Papal insights and useful reference material in this book.
